St. Olympia Orthodox Church in Potsdam, NY, is young church community under the Orthodox Church of America, Diocese of New York/New Jersey in cooperation with the Monastery of St. Silouan the Athonite, OCA Archdiocese of Canada. Divine Liturgies are held weekly at a private chapel. Fellowship and a parish lunch follow the services. For many years prior to the establishment of this mission, St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Watertown, NY, came to Potsdam twice a year to hold a liturgy. The services offered by this mission parish are meant to supplement those offerings.
Members of the St. Olympia Orthodox Church are from all ethnic backgrounds: Greek, Russian, Albanian, Ukrainian, Eritrean... and just plain American. Services are primarily in English, and the music is from both the Byzantine chant and Russian choral traditions. The community is a mix of students, post-doctoral researchers and faculty, as well as local families. It is a blend of “cradle Orthodox," converts to the faith and people exploring Orthodoxy. The community is cared for by our Priest Fr. Peter Irfan Acting Rector.
